Biography

Gregory J. A. Murad, MD, FAANS received his BS degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University in 1997 and his medical degree in May of 2001 from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. In 2001, he began his neurosurgical training at the University of Florida.

In 2004, he spent a year as a Clinical Fellow at the N.I.H./NINDS studying investigational treatment for brain tumors under the guidance of Drs. Ed Oldfield and Russell Lonser.

Dr. Murad was honored as the recipient of the Highest resident Board score award in 2006, the Resident research award in 2006, and the Charles P. Chuck Shank award in 2007. Dr. Murad completed his residency in June 2007 and joined the faculty as a Clinical Lecturer, followed by promotion to Assistant Professor in 2008.

Dr. Murad became board certified in Neurological Surgery in 2013, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014.  He was the associate residency program director from 2011-2015, and became the Residency Program Director in 2015.  He has subsequently been promoted to full Clinical Professor in July of 2019.

Dr. Murad is active in numerous neurosurgical organizations.  He is the past president of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, and continues to hold a seat on the board.  He is the Florida representative to the council of state neurosurgical societies, and is the Vice chair of the Southeast quadrant, and a member of the executive committee as the publications subcommittee Chair. He also is involved with national neurosurgical education efforts in the area of traumatic brain injury as a lecturer at AANS and CNS meetings, and an instructor in EVD placement at the SNS Intern Boot camp, the AANS Top Gun competition, and numerous advanced practice provider courses.  He is also the past winner of the Samuel Hassenbusch Young Neurosurgeon award, the UF Faculty Mentor of the year, and is a 7 time winner of the UF exemplary teacher award.

Dr. Murad has served as an ad hoc reviewer for Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, and the New England Journal of Medicine.  He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurologic Surgeons, the AANS/ CNS Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care, and the Florida Neurosurgical society.

Dr. Murad provides care to patients with all neurosurgical conditions, however, his primary focus is general and complex spinal surgery, traumatic brain injury, and brain tumors.  He specializes in applying innovative surgical techniques and novel technologies for the treatment of spinal degenerative, trauma, deformity, tumor, rheumatologic and infectious disorders, as well as novel treatments and management strategies for severe traumatic brain Injury.
